The CDC’s “Get Smart About Antibiotics Week”
November 16 to 22

The overuse of antibiotics for common childhood illnesses has created a serious, health problem: antibiotic resistance. This means that some drugs designed to fight bacterial infections may no longer be effective.

The CDC is raising awareness about this major public health problem during its “Get Smart About Antibiotics Week” program. Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is proud to be a steward of this project for our region. We already adhere to the CDC’s recommended practices for antibiotic use and are doing our part get the word out to parents and raise awareness about when it is and is not necessary to prescribe antibiotics.

The CDC program provides information for parents about not only when it is appropriate and when it is not to prescribe antibiotics, but also about the use  antibiotics in our food source, antimicrobial initiatives, development of new non-resistant antibiotics and more.
