Teens Celebrate With a Star-Studded Prom Night at Stony Brook Children's Hospital

First it was hair, then makeup, and finally the perfect outfit. And like any other prom, next it was time to take the photos! Nearly 50 teens showed up on Saturday evening to walk the red carpet into a star-studded Prom night at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital.

That's right, roaring down Nicolls Road on Sunday, December 13th, hundreds of Long Island motorcycle riders and fire engines, will deliver hundreds of toys and gift cards that were gathered during Full Throttle Magazine's Winter Wonderland event. These toys and goodies will be presented to patients at Stony Brook Children's Hospital, many who will be spending the holiday season in the hospital, during the publication's 6th annual Toy Run.

Home Intervention Improves Child Vaccination Rates Among Children Living in Poverty

A program by Stony Brook Children's Hospital that involves the use of trained community health workers on child immunization reveals that home intervention and education improves vaccine/immunization rates in at-risk children, including those living in poverty. Overall, the intervention improved the likelihood of up-to-date immunization status by more than 15 percent for children up to 2 years of age compared to those without the intervention. The study involved more than 300 pediatric patients and is published in the journal Vaccine.

As written about in the Wall Street Journal's Informed Patient column, Stony Brook Children's Hospital clinicians follow pain management protocols to proactively, preemptively, and consistently treat pain in each and every pediatric patient. Known as the Ouchless Approach to Pediatric Medicine, Margaret McGovern, MD, PhD, Physician-in-Chief, describes it as the cornerstone of treatment for pediatric patients at Stony Brook Children's. Designed to specifically address acute pain, the approach acknowledges that many children arrive in pediatric emergency departments in different levels of pain, following an injury or because of an illness, etc. And clinicians often have to give injections, reset broken bones, and do other procedures may result in pain or discomfort in patients.
