Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics
Who We Are
Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics is one of the pediatric subspecialties of Stony Brook Children's. Our team of experts cares for infants, toddlers, children, adolescents, and their families with a wide range of neurodevelopmental and behavioral disorders.
What We Do
We assist families and primary care physicians in the diagnosis, monitoring and treatment of a broad range of developmental, behavioral, learning and genetic disorders. In addition to providing comprehensive clinical care and consultation, our team is actively involved in research and education, contributing significantly to local, regional, national and international conversations addressing children's medical status, emotional health, development and behavior.
Our team works closely with families, primary care providers, early childhood providers, early intervention, school teams, and other community agencies to ensure children and families have the supports they need.
Does your child need to be evaluated by us?
- Is your infant or toddler late walking or saying words?
- Do you have concerns about your toddler's or preschooler's (age three to five years) development or language development?
- Is your child having difficulties making friends?
- Do you have concerns about autism?
- Does your child have difficulty focusing and paying attention in class?
- Do you have concerns about your child's behavior?
Any of these issues are a valid reason for consulting with your child's pediatrician. If concerns persist or the pediatrician advises it, a consultation by a developmental and behavioral specialist may be in order.
Our Current Programs:
- Infant and Toddler Program (0 to three years of age)
- Preschool Program (three to five years of age)
- Community Early Autism Diagnostic Program (0 to five years of age)
- School Program (six to 12 years of age) - Please note that the age cut off for this program is 12 years 0 months
We provide comprehensive evaluations and care for:
- Autism Spectrum Disorder
- Language delay, motor delay
- Global developmental delay and intellectual disability
- ADHD and Medication Management
- Learning/Academic Problems
Our Team
Our Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics team consists of a neurodevelopmental disabilities pediatrician, a developmental behavioral pediatrician and a developmental pediatric nurse practitioner. All of our professionals collaborate with other specialists and subspecialists within our academic medical center to seek the best possible outcomes for each child. In addition, we work with the child's family, school and other agencies to obtain the input necessary to address each patient’s unique needs and problems.

Patient Resources
Within the developmental and behavioral pediatrics division, we assess each child's needs and challenges and work with the family to develop a care plan leading to developmental, behavioral and learning success. In addition to evaluation and clinical care consultations, we also can recommend therapies (physical, occupational and speech), tutoring and family support services.

Research and Education
Our team is actively involved in research that advances our understanding of autism, its early signs,and developing appropriate trainings for early childhood providers to improve identification and access.

Stony Brook Children's is a teaching hospital, and each member of the Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics team serves as an educator as well as a clinician. We teach medical students and residents enrolled in the Stony Brook University School of Medicine. We are involved in the Stony Brook LEND (Leadership and Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) program and mentor trainees. We are involved in training providers in other departments and in the community, and we also present at local, regional and national conferences regularly.
LILYA-T (Lively Autism Screening Test in Young Children)
LILYA-T (Lively Autism Screening Test in Young Children) represents the next generation of autism screening, developed by Dr. Roula Choueiri, the developer behind the Rapid Interactive Screening for Autism in Toddlers.
LILYA-T is an interactive, observational Level 2 screening measure used to assess Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) risk in toddlers and young children up to age 3 years, 6 months. For those older than 3years, you can adminsiter the LILYA-T if you have concerns for autism and the child has severe language delays.
