What began as a routine, low-risk pregnancy became an emergency when Kareem Trent was born unexpectedly at home at just 22 weeks. Weighing only 1.6 pounds, and facing unimaginable odds, he and his mother arrived Stony Brook Children's Hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) after being transferred via Stony Brook’s Regional Perinatal Transport Center.

In this moving story, Kareem's mother and his neonatologist recount the extraordinary journey that followed. From his fragile first days to becoming the youngest preemie ever cared for at the children’s hospital, Kareem's story is one of resilience, hope and the lifesaving expertise of a dedicated team.
